Thiscouldhavedegeneratedintonothingmorethanjustanotherteenrevengecomedy,butthere'ssomuchmore:thedialogueislacedwithsharpwittherearesomelovelyscenesthathavenothingtodowiththestoryyetarecarefullysetup,almostasblackouts(e.g.,Mitchgoestoalectureatwhichafewstudentshavelefttaperecordersinsteadofattendinglater,atanotherlecturetherearemoretaperecordersthanstudentsand,inafinalscene,onelargetaperecordergivesthelecturetoaroompopulatedbynothingbutothersmallrecorders!)andthrow-awayscenesthatmakeyouwanttostopandbackupthetape(e.g.,Chrisoff-handedlycuttingasliceoffabarofsolidnitrogentomakeaslugforthecoffeemachine).
